XYZ Services Company, the consulting and outsourcing firm you work for, is getting up and running after a massive IT infrastructure failure. In the meantime, the Human Resources department would like a report with basic staff data that it will use to distribute payslips to employees. As a PowerShell developer, you’ll use the switch statement and its file parameter to read and extract information from the source files provided by the company’s Active Directory before the system failed, build PowerShell objects, and export them into CSV format—helping HR provide proof of payment and putting your coworkers’ minds at ease.

prerequisites

This liveProject is for technology administrators and intermediate-level PowerShell users who want to learn or expand their text and string parsing skills. To begin these liveProjects you’ll need to be familiar with the following:

  • Intermediate PowerShell 7
  • Visual Studio Code with PowerShell extension

    In this liveProject, you’ll learn how to use the switch statement and its file parameter to read and extract information from source files, build PowerShell objects, and export them into CSV format.

    • Use simple regular expressions and the match operator to find strings that match a given pattern
    • Use the foreach statement to sequentially process objects from a collection
    • Work with the Length property of the objects with System.String type
    • Use the IndexOf and Substring methods to select substrings from a text string
    • Use the Trim method to remove unwanted characters from a string
    • Build an object using the PSCustomObject type accelerator
    • Add properties to an existing custom object using the Add-Member cmdlet
    • Export objects to a CSV file to generate a report
    • Display objects on the screen
