Preface

Greetings Gentlebeing!

My name is Gary Malkin. I was the principal editor of the Internet Users' Glossary. It is a very popular document within the Internet community. By design, that glossary was limited to Internet-specific terms, along with a few supporting terms. This means that it was very IP-centric. Using that glossary as a starting point, I have created the book you now hold.

The Comprehensive Networking Glossary and Acronym Guide (whew, quite a mouthful) contains 1501 terms and acronyms from AppleTalk, DECnet, IP, IPX, OSI, and telephony. It is richly cross-referenced, including three appendices listing Networks & Organizations, Security-Related Terms, and Applications & Protocols. There are also two dozen illustrations.

My electronic mail address is gmalkin@xylogics.com. If you have access to the Internet, I hope, as you use this book, that you will take the time to send questions, suggestions, and, most importantly, corrections to me. Without your input, a second edition won't be as useful to you as you might like.
