DESCRIPTION

Most textbooks concentrate on presenting the theory, concepts, and products, with examples of implementations in some cases. The distinctive quality of SNA and TCP/IP Enterprise Networking is in its structure. It answers not only "What?", "Why?", and "How?", but also "What's next?". It shows the reader how enterprise networking evolved, what approaches and techniques can be used today, and where tomorrow's trends lie, illustrating among others Web-to-SNA connectivity and Java based integration approaches.

SNA and TCP/IP Enterprise Networking was written by visionaries, scientists, networking product developers, industry experts, consultants, and end-user representatives, who not only implement the products but also participate in definition of open networking standards. It should be equally appealing to the network practitioners implementing technology as the senior managers making strategic decisions on enterprise networking.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS...

A mathematician by training, Daniel C. Lynch organized the first meetings of the Internet technical community and gradually turned them into the industry's leading technical conference and show: Interop. He is currently a private venture capitalist focussing on Internet companies and is Chairman of CyberCash, a public company.

James P. Gray is the Director of eNetwork Studies in IBM's Software Solutions Division. Dr. Gray joined IBM in 1970, working first on microprocessor architectures and then on SNA from 1972 until 1984 when he was named an IBM Fellow for his work in networking. Since 1984 he has led a variety of IBM efforts in network technology.

Edward Rabinovitch, a physicist by training, has more than twenty years experience in information technology and data communications. He is currently Senior Network Design Consultant with the 3Com Corporation. Eddie has published more than 70 technical papers and is a frequent speaker at national and international conferences.

WHAT REVIEWERS ARE SAYING

SNA and TCP/IP Enterprise Networking was reviewed on the "Developer Exchange" web site (www.devx.com):

"Analysts estimate that more than 50,000 SNA installations exist today. Most of them will remain operative in the next several years and will have to be tweaked to support new trends and networking standards. SNA and TCP/IP Enterprise Networking presents various methods of combining legacy SNA systems with newer technologies such as Web connectivity and distributed network management. Due to the emergence of e-commerce and distributed objects on the one hand, and the overwhelming costs of replacing existing networking infrastructures on the other hand, this book-although written in 1997-remains useful today."
